The KiSS programme was established in 2013, with the Tuscan circuit being the first to host a KiSS event. This initial event marked the beginning of a series of events held at circuits worldwide. The FIM champion this project with the support of Yamaha Motor Racing, DORNA, IRTA, and each circuit. The project quickly gained traction and became an FIM flagship sustainable event organisation programme, attracting other disciplines. KiSS events have now been organised in enduro, rallies, speedway, trial, supermoto, ISDE, and four continental unions showcasing the global impact of our collective efforts.
Each KiSS event
is unique and tailored to the specific goals and requirements of the organiser. FIM experts collaborate with the National Federation, the organiser, the sustainability steward, promoters, and other key stakeholders to design the event. The KiSS programme emphasises collaboration, partnership, and integration of all involved parties. The organisation of KiSS events focuses primarily on the social and environmental aspects of sustainability.
Compliance with the FIM Environmental Code and other national or regional regulations oriented to environmental protection are compulsory. The programme has incorporated the local community and other actions aimed at climate action, biodiversity, inclusion, proximity food, and surplus food collection. To make sustainable sports events a success, all stakeholders need to work together, which is the essence of this project.
From the start, the KiSS Mugello was a collaborative effort, with the participation of all sectors and social associations playing a crucial role. This collective approach was instrumental in raising awareness among participants about the need to reduce litter and improve collective behaviour.
In the ten plus years since KiSS Mugello began, the project has evolved. The Mugello Circuit is one of the top circuits in the world, where sustainability plays a crucial role. Its commitment to sustainability ensures the success of the event and has played a significant role.
This year, biodiversity is in the pole position, and it is not a coincidence. The circuit is located in one of the most reachable regions in biodiversity, and they have a good record of promoting biodiversity in the region.
Facts about biodiversity in Mugello Circuit
• Mugello circuit is a green lung of undoubted importance since it features 900,000 m2 of green areas and 300,000 m2 of wooded areas, in which 254 trees were planted in the period 2020-2021. Thanks to the two poplars (white and italic) an assimilation of approximately 103,886 kg of CO2 (103,886 t of CO2) is estimated.
• The circuit cares for and protects the flora present. It has also activated several important projects aimed at protecting its fauna in equal measure. In fact, every year, preventive capture of wild animals is carried out with the Territorial Hunting Environment of Florence to better protect the environment and promote biodiversity.
• Nests have also been set up for migratory birds and feeders for fallow deer.
• The circuit area is particularly suitable for the settlement of different species of animals. Among the many, we find roe deer and fallow deer, but there are also examples of foxes, wild boars, and porcupines. This winter, additional nests for migratory birds and feeders for fawns were placed.
• This year Mugello has adopted 120000 bees that will live in the San Donato Turn.
Biodiversity as a main protagonist of KiSS Mugello 11th edition
In this edition, the extraordinary biodiversity of the Mugello Valley will be promoted and its value understood through various tools and ways of engaging the public and insiders: games and informative panels will recount the curiosities and characteristics of the flora and fauna of the territory in which the circuit is immersed.
The circuit has dedicated a special area to host hives for pollinating bees to send a strong message to raise awareness on the importance of bees for the ecosystem and biodiversity. On Thursday 30th May, some riders visited the site and participated in a demonstration of the hives' organisation and a conversation with a specialist who explained the importance of this species for the preservation of biodiversity.
This edition of KiSS Mugello also includes other activities aimed at reducing the carbon footprint with the proper recycling of the discarded PET bottles generated during the event. This call-to-action for the collection of PET bottles is promoted by COREPLA (National Consortium for the Collection, Recycling and Recovery of Plastic Packaging), and will involve the teams’ hospitalities, the circuit restaurant, and the MotoGP VIP Village™ with the placement of personalised containers for the collection. Also, an incentive eco-compactor will be located at the KiSS Mugello info desk in the paddock area, and some “green rangers” will move among the public to raiseawareness about the correct disposal of PET bottles and their collection by using special personalised rucksacks.
KiSS Mugello also heavily incorporates the social dimension of sustainability. Every year, a solidarity pit walk is organised, and surplus food is collected and donated to a local NGO.
Apart from the specific KiSS Activities, the event is completed by the permanent actions carried out by Dorna and FIM in compliance with the Event Guidelines based in the FIM Environmental Code, measure and reduction of GHG emissions, for example, incorporation of non-fossil fuels by 2024, fuel in all MotoGP™ classes will be of minimum 40% non-fossil origin, and by 2027, fuel in all MotoGP™ classes will be of 100% non-fossil origin.
