Easter Sunday was the date for the opening round of the 2022 British Sidecarcross championships held at Sherwood MX Park hosted by Nora MX.
This was the first time the championship had been to this track so it was something new for all the riders. The soft sandy ground would mean it would probably be a case of survival of the fittest by the end of the day.
When practice started shortly after 9 o’clock the sun was out the track looked in really good condition for the days racing. In timed practice defending champions Stuart Brown / Josh Chamberlain set the fastest time just a fraction quicker than Irishman Gary Moulds and his passenger Lewis Gray. In third place were Brett Wilkinson / Joe Millard.
The first race of the day saw Moulds slightly ahead as they approached turn one but as they reached the corner S.Brown just took the lead. Wilkinson was in third and Hodges fourth.
Wilkinson was in determined mood and quickly closed up on Moulds but try as he did he wasn’t able to overtake until the closing stages of the race. As the race went on J.Brown began to move up the field and he finally passed the Irishman.
Race two saw Moulds take the holeshot from S.Brown and Wilkinson. This lead was short lived as Wilkinson and Brown were very soon past. Wilkinson held the lead with Brown right in his wheel tracks for lap after lap. A couple times he tried to overtake on the corner just after the finish line but never quite succeeded and finally had to settle for second. Behind the leaders Moulds held on to third and Foden / Cooper secured fourth. Behind him there was three way battle involving J.Brown, Kinge and Hodges. This scrap was finally headed by Brown from Kinge and Hodges.
With S.Brown and Wilkinson on equal points as they came to the line for the last race there was all to play for. Moulds once again took the holeshot with S.Brown second, Wilkinson third and Foden fourth. By lap two Wilkinson and S.Brown were past and remained in those positions to the end. J.Brown worked his way past Foden to finish fourth.
In the Experts class the winner on the day was Hodges.
The next round is at the Duns track in Scotland on 1st May.
