Southern 100 Motorcycle Show Success Due to Supporters and Fans

Southern 100 Racing and show organisers Southern 100 Supporters Club would like to thank everybody who took the trouble to attend the Southern 100 Motorcycle Show supported by IFGL on Saturday 10th July on what should have been the start of Southern 100 Race Week 2021.

The Southern 100 Supporters Club are grateful to the Domestic Event Fund, organised and run by Business Isle of Man, an Executive Agency for the Department for Enterprise for their involvement which is much appreciated.

One of the main attractions of the day, the Motorcycle Display Competition attracted 120 entries which took the five people judging three-hours to complete their assessments. The ten classes were generously sponsored by: Foraging Vintners; Primus; Agriweld (IOM); Tom Ashton (Bolton) Ltd; The Camper Company; The Carshop; Outlier Distilling Company & ICR Retail Systems.

The five judges, Clarissa Beadman, Chris Palmer, Dave Redmayne, Steve Moynihan, and a guest judge from the Vintage MCC (IOM) had a difficult task, such was the quality of the entries it took nearly 3 hours to confirm the winners.

The sixty plus stalls displaying racing machines, past and present and various types of motorcycle memorabilia, several fundraising organisations, mainly road racing, all raising money for their worthwhile causes along with some trade stands all adding to the tremendous atmosphere in the Race Paddock.

Media Partners, Manx Radio promoted the days event via their airwaves during the week and broadcast live between 10.30am and 1.00pm interviewing numerous people involved in all aspects of the show providing listeners with a ‘taster’ to come down to Castletown and experience the show for themselves, which helped swell the attendance to around 5,000 during the six hours the show was open.

The food stalls were kept busy all day, as was the Bouncy Castle and Giant Slide sponsored by Daryl Blake Construction was enjoyed by many of the youngster’s present enjoying their day out as a family at one of the first ‘family’ events the Island has seen in 2021.

The organisers are appreciative of the presence of The Phil Hogg Motorsport Association for providing medical cover, as well as ‘exhibiting’ their latest Hogg Ambulance. The Isle of Man Constabulary for the traffic management, especially at the end of the show; The Isle of Man Roads Safety Unit for assisting with the safe parking of the numerous motorcycles that arrived during the day. IFGL and Castle Rushen High School for over-spill parking facilities and to Beach Buddies who ensured the fields and car park, courtesy of Paul Costain was in pristine condition at the end of the day, as it was at the beginning.

Throughout the day the spectators were entertained by the Station Garage International Trials Team with highlight of the day the appearance of the World-Famous Purple Helmets performing at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour!

During the evening at the Train Triangle between the Railway Station, The Sidings (Duck’s Nest) and The Viking Public Houses live music provided by Acoustic Atmosphere, Trevor Shimmin and The Bird and The Beards entertained the crowds, bringing the ‘The Spirit of The Southern 100’ Day to a close.

Club Chairman George Peach said: ‘What a fantastic day out the Motorcycle Show proved to be, enhanced by the evening entertainment kindly provided by Licensees Tom & Marcus.

‘None of the show would have been possible without the support and contributions provided by our sponsors, exhibitors, stall holders, Manx Radio, the Vintage MCC (IOM), The Classic Car Club, the Station Garage International Junior Trial Team and the World-Famous Purple Helmets Display Team.

‘The volunteer Southern 100 Marshals, some from across, other helpers, our catering ladies, the Committee and Dale Fordham, who first hinted at the idea and very much helped bring it to the successful event it was, all made it possible, and I thank them most sincerely and look forward to seeing them again in 2022 when we will be racing once again on the Billown Course.’
