The third round of the Maxxis ACU British Sidecarcross Championships took place at the Dean Moor circuit in Cumbria where conditions were warm and dry but rain in the preceding week had dampened the track sufficiently to significantly help the club with dust management.
Before the racing started it was well known that current champions, Stuart Brown / Joe Millard, would be starting despite Stuart having broken his wrist two weeks before. Sadly for them it did not work out and a first race crash aggravated the injury and they finally came away with just two points and dropped to fourth in the championship table.
In the morning practice session Brown was quickest from Wilkinson / Chamberlain with Moulds / Kirwin in third place.
When the gate dropped for race one Moulds took the lead from Kinge / Keane with Brown third and Wilkinson fourth. Brown crashed about half way round the first lap and damaged his wrist. Trying to right the stricken outfit Millard stepped out in front of Grahame / Lloyd sending Grahame over his handlebars and leaving Millard battered and bruised. The pair continued but finally pulled out on lap seven.
Moulds held the lead for four laps but was taken on lap five by Wilkinson who then pulled away to win comfortably from the Irishman. Kinge remained in third whilst Hodges held fourth until lap five when he had to stop thus giving the place to Jake Brown / Snell. Unfortunately they only held fourth for two laps when their steering damper broke and they were forced to slow down finally finishing twelfth. Fourth place went to the leading expert team of Osbaldiston / Cooper.
In the second race Wilkinson led from gate to flag with Moulds in second place. Brown was initially in third but had to pull out on lap five because of his damaged wrist. On the same lap Kinge pulled out when Keane injured his leg.
Grahame held third for the middle of the race but was overtaken J.Brown on lap seven and had to settle for fourth place. The leading expert was again Osbaldiston.
The final race of the day was led for the duration by Wilkinson thus giving him the overall win on the day with a full house. Moulds held second for half the race but was caught and passed by J.Brown. Hodges held fourth until half way but was then overtaken by Grahame. Osbaldiston was again the leading expert.
So at the half way point in the championship Wilkinson now leads by thirty six points from Moulds with J.Brown in third a further twenty one points adrift. In the experts class Balsillie / Haynes still lead with Oldfield / Phelps twenty six points behind.
The next round is on 9th September at Little Loveney Hall, Wakes Colne.
