West Country racer Dan Cooper dominated the racing at a hot and sunny Aberdare Park, winning all six of the races that he started. The former British 125cc champion, from Stroud, claimed the prestigious Welsh Open title in the process.
Merthyr rider Jay Bellers-Smith upheld local honours, the KTM rider having a fantastic battle with Northern Ireland’s John Simpson, Bellers-Smith going on to take the Mini Sound of Thunder title with two wins and a second place.
The glorious weather attracted bumper crowds to the town centre park but also gave the event organisers a few headaches. “Our marshals did an amazing job enduring the heat to keep our riders safe but with two races of our 30 race programme remaining, the heat meant that some parts of the tarmac were starting to get slippery” explained Derek Smith from the organisers, Aberaman and District Motorcycle Club.
“The safety of riders, spectators and officials is always paramount so, as Club Steward, I agreed with Clerk of the Course Ian McLeod that we should cancel the final two races rather than take any unnecessary risks.”
