The Association of Classic Trials Clubs is delighted to announce that Graham Lampkin has been appointed as the new Motorcycle Co-ordinator for the 2018 season.
Graham says “The first thing that a motorcyclist has to learn is that it is the format of the ACTC events which is classic and bikes of all ages, not just classic bikes, are welcome. Don’t compare ACTC events with a modern single venue trial; they are ideal for the trail rider, someone who wants to ride off road but not extreme off road, or pre-65 riders looking for a day out. Imagine the Beamish without the questions, or the MCC trials condensed into one day (with much less road mileage and no night time riding) and you have the idea. The only major restriction is that road-legal trials tyres are compulsory, and more aggressive endurotype tyres are banned.”
Most ACTC events cater for both bike and cars, with the bikes running ahead of the cars. Expect to cover 60 to 100 miles on public roads, unsurfaced byways, and private land, tackling 15 to 20 observed sections along the way. Because they cater for cars, the sections aren’t tight or severe, but some are long and more like hill climbs up rutted tracks – the sort of going that you may encounter when trail riding. The sections aren’t scored like motorcycle trials – one foot and you’ve failed the section, with graduated scoring based on how far up you’ve climbed before your first foot.
There’s a wide geographical spread of events, from the Lakes in the North West, and Durham in the North East, down through the Midlands and into the South West, with the ACTC running both national and regional championships for the more competitive rider. But many riders are just looking for a good day out in fantastic scenery. Why not join them? The only pre-event paperwork you need is ACU Trials Registration, currently costing just £10 per year.
