Sunday saw the motocross season burst back into action with the Hawkstone International taking place at the world famous Shropshire circuit. With a great line up of Grand Prix and International riders, the thousands of fans were treated to a fantastic days racing once the early morning fog lifted.
In the MX2 class it was Red Bull Factory KTM’s Pauls Jonass who dominated the class taking victories in both races to claim the MX2 overall. Jonass started the day on the right style by taking the fastest time in the morning qualification session by over 2 seconds ahead of Thomas Kjer-Olsen in second and Thomas Covington in third with top Brit Conrad Mewse in fourth.
The opening race saw Jonass take the holeshot and claim the race win by a comfortable margin over Rockstar Energy Factory Husqvarna riders Thomas Covington in second and team mate Thomas Kjer-Olsen in third ahead of Brit Ben Watson in fourth place.
The second MX2 race was almost a repeat of the first with Jonass making the start and taking the win ahead of Kjer-Olsen and Hunter Lawrence in third with Mewse as the top Brit in fifth place. The two race wins gave Jonass the overall victory ahead of Kjen-Olsen and Covington.
Qualifying for the MX1 class saw the Factory Suzuki team take the top two positions with Arminas Jasikonis fastest ahead of Kevin Strijbos, while Max Anstie rounded out the top three. In the opening race Anstie had the British fans on their feet by taking the holeshot and leading the race from start to finish. Just behind in second was Anstie’s Husqvarna team mate Max Nagl with Jasikonis in third place.
Once again Anstie made the start in the second MX1 race and took the early lead but made a mistake and crashed during the opening laps and remounted down the order. This allowed Nagl to take the race win ahead of Gautier Paulin and Clement Desalle in third place. Anstie managed to recover to finish in fifth place. Nagl’s win gave him the overall victory in MX1 ahead of Anstie in second and Jasikonis in third. The award for the highest placed 2 stroke went to Mike Kras on the GL12 Racing KTM who finished in eighth place overall.
Alongside the MX1 and MX2 class was the supporting Youth class which saw Tom Grimshaw take the overall ahead of Howard Wainwright and Joe Cadwallader in second and third place in the 250f class, while in the 125cc class it was Adam Collings who took the win over Charlie Cole and Josh Peters.
The final and main race of the day was the Superfinal which saw the MX2 rider line up first and then the MX1 class complete the line-up. It was Max Nagl who made the start ahead of MX2 rider Pauls Jonass. As the race settled down it was Nagl who took the win with Jordi Tixier and Max Anstie rounding out the podium, while Jonass finished as the highest MX2 rider in fifth.
