In August 2016 former World Championship motorcycle racer Phil Armes made history when he became the first paraplegic to ride a solo motorcycle around the Isle of Man TT course.
Phil broke his back at the Ulster Grand Prix in 1995, leaving him paralysed from the lower chest down, and confined to a wheelchair; so he was resigned to the fact that he would never get to ride again.
Fast forward 21 years, and the man from Norwich not only got back on a bike, but completed all 37 ¾ miles of the world’s most challenging track.
Riding at the Classic TT was the height of his return to two wheels, but just two weeks prior to this historic ride, he also made an emotional return to Northern Ireland to successfully complete a lap of the Ulster GP course that he crashed at 21 years ago. He commented afterwards, “the Dundrod track is known as the fastest road race in the world, but it took me 21 years to complete a lap which has to be some sort of record in it’s own right!”
It’s an incredible story, and you can hear it from the man himself at
Norwich Playhouse on November 8th when Phil will recount his racing career, talk through the challenges he faced after being paralysed and confined to a wheelchair, and his return to two wheels to ride a lap of the Isle of Man TT course.
Packed with anecdotes, video, and photos, it promises to be a great night out for anyone who has a love of bikes, or a passion for life!
