The UK’s premier motorcycle Road Race Marshals Association has affiliated to the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU).
The ACU Motorcycle Marshals Association was created in 2008 to act as an umbrella training provider for all ACU road race Marshals and clubs. With over 1200 registered ACU Marshals on its books, the MMA represents the bulk of the UK Marshals.
Marshals organisation Racesafe has been training and organising marshals for the British Superbike Championships for the last 14 years and has a regular active membership of over 600.
The move to affiliate to the ACU, to sit alongside the ACU’s Motorcycle Marshals Association (MMA), has been driven by a desire to standardise training for marshals across the country, providing a common standard of marshal cover for motorcycle road race events across the UK.
Mike Blakey, Company Secretary for Racesafe and a regular marshal for over 45 years, believes the move will be very positive for motorcycle road race marshalling.
Blakey explained: “I think a combination of the strengths of the MMA and Racesafe can only be of benefit to the future of motorcycle marshalling in the UK.”
The ACU Chairman Jim Parker is also delighted by the development. He said: “It is so good to see both organisations combining their efforts in this essential aspect of motorcycle sport. Without marshals there is no sport and now, thanks to the efforts of Racesafe and the MMA, we have a credible and sustainable national training programme for all marshals.”
