Peter Gregory of the ACU’s Track Racing Committee wishes to thank Island Speedway for a superb inaugural running of the FIM Track Racing 1000cc Sidecar Gold Trophy at Smallbrook Speedway Stadium, Ryde on 5th August 2006.
All those fans that attended the Stadium and the viewers who tuned into Sky Sports Live coverage of the event witnessed some thrilling racing and were rewarded with two British Teams, Gary Jackson/Carl Blyth and Rob Wilson/Nicky Owen on the podium in 2nd and 3rd places respectively, at the end of the night.
The Wilson/Owen result all the more remarkable with it being on his Grass Track machine! Whilst the event itself ran very smoothly the Australian and New Zealand Teams had a very fraught time leading up to the meeting after the ship carrying the majority of their machinery was delayed en route to these shores, only the Stuart Firth and Darren Fleming outfit failed to arrive, requiring the camaraderie of Track Racing to show and a bike built specially for him to use.
Peter said “Congratulations must go to Australians Scott Christopher and Trent Koppe for lifting the Gold Trophy for the first time. We knew the Australian and New Zealand teams were going to be very strong, but the home teams certainly proved that the difference between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere is reducing. Commiserations go out to Darrin Treloar and Justin Plaisted who were superb throughout the evening, only to see the machine suffer tyre problems in the Final.”
