Choosing a Sport for you
Trials
Trials Riding is the most
popular by participant and
certainly the cheapest and easiest to take up and provides a basis of machine
control that can be used in all other forms
of motorcycle sport.
Enduro
Enduro is a test of
rider and machine in an event in which the result is decided by the rider’s
ability to ride to a set time schedule combined with times set on special
tests, all calculated to the nearest second with the lowest total time deciding the
finishing positions.
Motocross
Motocross is a high profile,
glamorous and high
octane sport enjoyed
by thousands of competitors throughout the year predominantly from March to October.
ACU Motocross events
take place on purpose built off- road tracks with spectacular jumps and fast corners.
This is an event where
the racing takes
place on 100% tarmac surfaces. This includes permanent short circuits and temporary street circuits.
Other forms of road racing include: Supermoto, Drag, Sprint and Hillclimb.
Track Racing is a form of motorcycle racing with the
two most popular forms being
Grasstrack and Speedway.
Grasstrack in its current form, takes place on a flat track consisting of two straights
and two bends usually constructed in a field. It is one of the oldest types of
motorcycle sports in the UK with the first meetings being held in the 1920’s.
Coaching and Training
Before starting to compete in events it would be a good idea to undertake some Coaching or Training and take part in some test days or track days. The ACU have a number of the Club/Project and Commercial Coaches and Training providers around that can assist you with your first experiences of Motorcycle Sport. All ACU Coaches are signed up to the ACU Child Protection Code of Practice, Ethical Code and Rider Training Guidelines. They also all carry First Aid qualifications and have undergone a Disclosure and Barring Check. More details can be found on the ACU website or by contacting the ACU Training Department.
ACU Marshals and other officials
All forms of Motorcycle Sport require many key personnel for events to take place and there is a number of ways you can become involved in Motorcycle Sport without competing. These include Observers – Race Marshals (both Off-Road and Road Racing) and Clerk of the Course – Technical Officials – Timekeepers and Event Secretaries.
