As the sole governing body for British motorcycle sport, the ACU has set sporting, technical and safety standards across all disciplines of the sport for more than 120 years. Today, the ACU Handbook is one of the most comprehensive sporting documents in world motorcycling.
As part of its ongoing commitment to support the organisation of safe and enjoyable events, the ACU has, during the last year, focused on reviewing the safety guidance information provided to off-road event organisers.
Working with ACU Sport Commissions, clubs, insurers and legal advisors, we are pleased to introduce a new ‘Health and Safety at Off-Road Events’ guidance document and a revised set of discipline-specific risk assessment templates for use at off-road events.
The revised risk assessment templates have been written in accordance with current Health and Safety Executive guidance and are designed to assist ACU organisers as they manage the various aspects of Health and Safety associated with Enduro, Grass Track, Motocross and Trials events.
The risk assessments were evaluated at pilot events last year and have been produced using an easy to edit PDF format. The updated documents are now available for immediate download at the ACU resource centre on the Sport-80 portal.
Matthew Edwards-Wear, ACU Secretary General, said: “The team involved in this review has spent a lot of time considering the various aspects of safety management at ACU-permitted events. We know how much work is involved in organising an ACU event and that most of our members do so on a voluntary basis. Every effort has been made to ensure the content is relevant and that the forms are in a format that is simple to use.”
Tim Lightfoot, ACU President, said: “While there are inherent risks associated with motorcycle sport, it is essential that we continue to promote the highest possible standards of safety management at our events. The revised documents, along with existing training and licensing programmes for officials, are an essential part of our effort to make the sport as safe as possible and ultimately insurable.”
