Great Britain’s golden generation Robert Lambert, Dan Bewley and Tom Brennan take on the world in a bid to be crowned FIM Speedway of Nations world champions at Manchester’s National Speedway Stadium on Saturday.
The Lions battle it out with Sweden, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Australia and Latvia on one of the world’s finest racetracks, competing on 500cc bikes that accelerate faster than a Formula 1 car, feature one fixed gear and have no brakes.
With its beautifully banked and high-speed corners, the National Speedway Stadium always delivers high-octane entertainment, with fans flocking from all over the world to witness the action. Tickets are still available online HERE.
The FIM SON is the ultimate test of team riding as riders work as a pair to score the most points, with four for a race win, three for second, two for third and zero for last place.
The GB trio will be bidding to repeat their unforgettable victory at the 2021 FIM SON in Manchester, which ended the country’s 32-year wait for a world team title as they beat Poland 5-4 in the Grand Final.
The Lions have since won silver medals in the 2022 FIM SON and 2023 Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup, and joint GB boss Simon Stead believes their returning heroes are even better than they were when they first lifted the world title three years ago.
He said: “I believe we have been better over the last two years than when we actually won it. I think that bodes well for Saturday. We have taken strides in the right direction, and we are all excited about what’s to come.
“It’s unfortunate to lose Tai, but we are in a fortunate position that we have two more GP riders and also Tom, who is really stepping up and performing at this level.
“I was always confident we would have our strongest two out on the day. The fact we have such a strong three is really fortunate for us.
“We know what it’s all about. No longer is a bronze or silver good enough anymore. People expect us to perform, which we have done during the past few years. We will be gunning for gold.”
There will also be FIM Team Speedway Under-21 World Championship action in Manchester on Friday as GB’s Under-21 side faces off with 16-time champions Poland, Denmark, Latvia, Australia, Germany, Czech Republic and Sweden in SON2. SGP2 star Leon Flint, Dan Thompson and British Under-21 champion Sam Hagon all fly the flag for GB.
