Thousands of local fans headed to Blaxhall on Sunday for the annual Revo ACU British Motocross Championship at the Suffolk venue. Racing enthusiasts were treated to a day of unforgettable competition across multiple classes from Big Wheel 85cc up to the Pro MX1 and MX2 contesting under the radiant sunshine.
In the Premier MX1 class it was a battle between the two Crendon Fastrack Honda’s of Conrad Mewse and Josh Gilbert in both races. In the opening race, it was Harri Kullas who claimed the Foxwood Trade sponsored Holeshot award and took the early race lead until Gilbert moved into the race lead on lap 2 with his teammate Mewse just behind on second. The pair battled hard for several laps until Gilbert made a small mistake and Mewse forced his way into the lead and managed to open a gap at the front and take the win over Gilbert, with Kullas in third. Fourth place went to Evgeny Bobryshev in fifth. Local interest saw Luke Parker in 13
th with Luke Benstead 14
th and Declan Whittle in 17
th with all three scoring points.
The second MX1 race later in the day saw Kullas take another Foxwood Holeshot before the Mewse took the lead on the opening lap with Gilbert in second once again. The pair battled at the front of the pack, with Mewse taking the win and overall victory, which saw him claim the Championship lead. Gilbert went on to finish second ahead of Kullas, with Evgeny Bobryshev taking another fourth over John Adamson in fifth. Local riders Luke Benstead and Luke Parker finished in the points in 15
th and 16
th. The overall was Mewse, Gilbert and Kullas.
In the opening MX2 race of the day, there was drama when a few riders misjudged the gate drop and hit the start gate and caused it to be damaged. As a result, the race was started under a Flag start, after one false start, the second start saw the race underway, and it was Bobby Bruce who claimed the Foxwood Trade Holeshot award and took the early race lead ahead of Swedish rider Isak Gifting and local rider Elliott Banks-Browne in third. On the second lap Gifting took over the lead while Bruce and Banks-Browne battled for second with Banks-Browne taking over the position before Bruce mounted a late charge to reclaim it. Unfortunately, fellow local rider Sam Nunn went out of the race at halfway with a technical problem while in 4
th place. The fourth and fifth places went to Charlie Cole and Joel Rizzi.
The final MX2 race once again saw restarts due to the damaged start gate. Once the race got underway it was Bobby Bruce who claimed another Foxwood Trade Holeshot award ahead of Joel Rizzi in second and Charlie Cole, but the charge was to come from lower down the field as Taylor Hammal came from inside the top 10 to get up to second behind Isak Gifting who had moved into the lead. Banks-Browne had worked his way into third while Bruce slipped to fourth just ahead of Charlie Cole in fifth. The overall result saw Gifting ahead of Banks-Browne and Bruce.
There was plenty of intense racing in the full line-up in the 125cc and 250cc classes. In the 250cc class, Billy Askew continue his winning streak taking race one and two victories. In race one Askew had over 30 seconds of play time ahead of local wildcard Bayliss Utting who would eventually claim second after coming through the pack from a bad start. Mckenzie Marshall would round out the race in third. Then came the second moto of the day that saw Joel Fisher take the Holeshot before Billy Askew took the lead and the race win for the overall, while Jak Taylor held second for the whole race before being passed by Bayliss Utting on the last corner of the last lap. Utting took second overall while Taylor would go on to finish third overall.
In the first 125cc class race Cambridgeshire Wal Beaney took his second race win of the season before finishing second in race two and tying for points with Championship leader Reece Jones, lending the upper hand to Jones who grabbed first on the podium as he took the win in race two. With Tyla Hooley making his first appearance of the season in third overall, taking third in both races.
The Big Wheel 85cc class has been highly contested by Josh Vail as he continues to show his strengths going 1-1 at Blaxhall. With another 90 points under his belt, he will continue to run the red plate. Jamie Keith was only seven seconds behind Vail in race one as he increases his points in the Championship taking second overall with two second-place finishes. In third today was Charlie Richmond with his 3-3 scorecard.
