It is with sadness, that Steve Brace aged 63 passed away peacefully on Saturday 22nd January, following a short battle with cancer.
Steve rode Grass Track competitively for a period of time during the 1980’s, and then became an accomplished Trials rider, he was also an active committee member of the Dunmow Motorcycle Club, where he held the position of Vice Chairman.
However, it was the technical aspects of motorcycle racing that became his main area of interest and having enrolled on the ACU Scrutineers training scheme, he rose through the ranks from Centre to Restricted and finally to becoming a National Technical Official.
In January 2015, Steve was elected to the ACU’s Track Racing Committee, where his input and focus was essentially reviewing and monitoring the technical rules of this discipline, with Steve often being seen at Grass Track events the length and breadth of the country.
In January 2019, Steve was invited to become a member of the FIM’s Technical Commission (CTI), where as a result he attended a number of World Championship events (Long Track, Speedway and Trials) in a technical capacity. Following this appointment, the Speedway Control Bureau asked Steve to become involved with the technical duties within British Speedway, and as a part of this responsibility he became a member of the ACU’s technical team at the FIM Speedway Grand Prix’s at Cardiff.
Those who knew him described him as being a ‘larger than life’ character who approached his duties with a chuckle and a smile, together with a willingness to help any rider solve any technical issues, so long as they were within the rules!……… Steve will be sadly missed by the Track Racing community across Europe, including organisers, promoters, riders, officials, and supporters alike.
Steve leaves a wife Julie, son Gary, and in the last few days before his death, he became a proud grandfather for the first time.
