Despite missing the opening round back in March, Iwan Roberts (TRRS) lifted the title in the Trial GB class near Matlock on Saturday. However, it was Toby Martyn (TRRS) who took the round win by the narrowest of margins - a single mark, from Dan Peace (Sherco) with James Dabill (Beta) completing the podium in third.
In a relatively low scoring event, which the section designers had always planned for this round, Martyn led on the opening lap by a single mark, but an unexpected failure on the first section second time round made the Cornishman work hard to stage a comeback. Effectively, two sections decided the outcome, the deep muddy entrance to the sixth and the awkward angled rocks of the tenth where Dabill recorded a superb, confident clean, on his second lap. Martyn went 5-2-1 here whilst his main rival, Peace recorded a double maximum and a brilliant two dab effort.
Billy Green (Montesa) posted his best result of the season to finish fourth with three very consistent laps, which was just enough to edge out ex Champion Jack Price (Vertigo) who was right in the hunt after lap one, but a double failure on sections nine and ten second time round and four other failures dropped him down the leader board.
Jack Peace (Sherco) had a day to forget when he dropped well behind the rest of the entry on time as his machine kept overheating. Pure determination and lots of bottles of water rewarded him with sixth position, four marks ahead of the new Champion, Roberts.
