Dan Bewley was crowned British Under-21 Champion with a 15-point maximum at Berwick on Wednesday.
Bewley triumphed without the need for semi-final and a Final as the meeting was curtailed after the 20 qualifying heats following a late start caused by power issues at Shielfield Park.
That meant Bewley’s win in Heat 16, where all four unbeaten riders at that stage met, proved crucial as he overtook home favourite Leon Flint to take his fourth victory of the night.
Flint also gave a tremendous performance as he finished second overall, dropping his only point to Bewley, whilst Anders Rowe completed the rostrum in third – whilst Drew Kemp was left frustrated after crashing when going for the lead in the first running of Heat 16.
Bewley said: “It’s more of a relief than anything, you’re only one bad start away from missing it, and there’s quite a lot of pressure.
“But I’m happy to get the job done and I had one quite interesting race there with Leon as well. I did most of it from the front, but I did one from behind, and I’m just relieved now.
“It would be good to get the senior one now to complete the set. I’ve been close, but this was a tough one because it was my last chance - but the senior one is probably less pressure because you’ve always got another year.”
