Today (1st September) the Wirral Hundred’s committee, after consulting with the Anglesey Circuit and after taking into account the continuing uncertainty and anomalies over the Welsh Government’s strict Covid-19 lockdown restrictions banning sporting events involving more than 30 people, agreed regrettably, in the absence of any tangible easing of the restrictions, to cancel the Club’s ‘Anglesey Grand’ race meeting scheduled for 10th & 11th October. The sadness is that so far no motorcycle road race meetings have taken place in Wales in 2020.
There are concessions that events at the Anglesey Circuit could take place provided the attenders (riders & their families, mechanics, officials, marshals, medics, etc) adhered to the Covid-19 social-distancing and PPE requirements, and in addition were split into strictly self-contained and isolated ‘clusters’ of no more than 30 people. This latter provision was again considered unworkable for a paddock fraternity that would probably total 500-600 people. We believe that there is the prospect of the 30-people restriction being eased, possibly to 100-people, in the foreseeable future, but currently the circuit’s management, after consulting with the various Government and local Authorities, is unable to gauge when it will be permitted, indeed when it will be considered safe and reasonable, to allow a ‘near-normal’ race meeting to take place.
The Club is, of course, hugely disappointed that all four of its race meetings at Anglesey and its scheduled race meeting at Oulton Park this year have had to be cancelled because of Coronavirus. Undaunted, the Club plans to run a full schedule of race meetings in 2021 and the hope now is that over the autumn and winter months there will be no spike in the pandemic, that there will be a consequent easing of the Welsh Government’s lockdown restrictions, particularly those applicable to motorsport events, and that most importantly the health and support of our riders, officials and marshals remain intact.
The Club and the Anglesey Circuit thank everyone for their patience and understanding throughout this difficult period.
