Knight Takes Victory at Blaxhall as Southgate Claims Expert Crown
Sunday saw the Woodbridge DMCC host the final round of the Bickers Lifting ACU Eastern Motocross Championship, which was supported by PP Sports at the fantastically prepared Blaxhall Circuit near Woodbridge. With over 150 riders competing there was plenty of action across all the classes.

The day begun with the practice and qualifying session to sort the riders into groups for the races later in the day. In the Expert class unfortunately, series leader Jake Nicholls suffered an injury in the qualifying session after setting the fastest time and withdrew from the rest of the meeting.

After lunch it was time for the races and in the Expert class there was a number of British Championship riders competing, along with the top local Experts. When the gate dropped it was Liam Knight that made the start and pushed hard at the front early on in the moto. Behind him Lewis Tombs worked his way for outside the top six to take second ahead of the Ashton Dickinson in third. Fourth and fifth places went to Jake Shipton and Luke Benstead.

The second race would once again see Knight make the start and this time it was Dickinson who was pushing hard behind in second and Tombs in third. The trio battled hard all race long and crossed the line less than 2 seconds apart in that order. Fourth place went to Josh Gilbert who recovered well from a crash in the opening race and Shaun Southgate crossed the line fifth to move ahead of Nicholls in the Championship by a point.

The final Expert race of the day saw Tom Grimshaw take the holeshot ahead of Knight who quickly moved into the lead ahead of Tombs and Dickinson. As the race went on Knight settled into a nice rhythm and took the win to make it three out of three. Dickinson managed to get past Tombs as did Gilbert, who try to make a last corner pass for second over Dickinson but went down and finished third with Tombs in fourth with Benstead fifth. Southgate rode a steady race after starting just inside the top 20 to bring it home in 11th place to secure the 2018 Bickers Lifting ACU Eastern Expert Motocross Championship.

In the Junior Championship Ryan Watts had already claimed the 2018 Bickers Lifting ACU Eastern Junior Motocross Championship at the previous round and was still looking to take more race wins. In the opening race it was Ben Alexander who took the holeshot, but Watts worked his way into the lead and took the win over Perry Galloway and Bill Moynes in third. Fourth place went to Connor Baldry and Ben Alexander took fifth.

The second race saw Alexander take another holeshot before losing the lead to Watts on the second lap. But at the mid race it was Moynes that took over the lead and claimed the win from Watts and Galloway in third. Fourth place went to Alexander with Ashly Campbell in fifth place.

The third and final race of the day and season for the Junior Championship saw Alexander make it a trio of holeshots on the day. Once again it was Watts who worked his way into the lead to claim the win and overall from Moynes and Galloway in third. Fourth went to Baldry and Campbell took fifth.

Also competing on the day were the two Junior Support groups. In the Support Group A it was Darren Gooch who took the overall win with two race wins and a second. Luke Hylton took second overall and Scott Claydon claimed third. Fourth and fifth went to Joshua Deadman and Gareth Cushion.

The Support Group B saw Charlie Dormer take the overall from Bradley Parradine in second and Andrew Cattermole in third. Fourth and fifth places overall went to Ryan Bailey and Tony Rooke.

Sunday’s event marked to the end to another successful season for the Woodbridge DMCC Club at their Blaxhall venue.
