Evgeny Bobryshev (Lombard Express Suzuki with PAR Homes) overturned a 39-point deficit to win the 2018 Maxxis ACU British MX1 Motocross Championship supported by Pro Clean at the final round at Cadders Hill, Lyng, on Sunday.
In the MX2 class the overall victory on the day and in the championship went to Conrad Mewse (Hitachi ASA KTM UK) while 15-year-old Rossi Beard (Putoline Planet Husqvarna) clinched the MXY2 title with a dominant performance.
Bobryshev’s title came at the expense of Jake Nicholls (Buildbase Honda) who had led the championship since the second round but broke his leg two weeks before Lyng and was unable to race. This meant the Russian needed to score 40 points to become champion which he comfortably managed by running 2-2 behind Tommy Searle (Bike It DRT Kawasaki).
“I’m mega,” said Bobryshev. “I last won in 2010 and this time it was much tougher. It was pretty easy in 2010 to get the title. Luck was on our side today.”
Following a disappointing season, Gert Krestinov (Phoenix Tools Apico Honda) scored his first podium finish of the championship this year with a 4-4 card good enough for third overall.
Mewse had been the man to beat all season but a DNF with a broken hand last time out at Hawkstone Park had seen his lead over Josh Gilbert (Buildbase Honda) cut to 14 points with Mel Pocock (REVO Husqvarna UK) just a single point further adrift.
After finishing fourth behind his two rivals in an opening moto won by Kiwi wild card Dylan Walsh (REVO Husqvarna UK), Mewse made sure of the title with victory in race two from Gilbert and Pocock who ended the championship in second and third.
“Obviously, I had a couple of injuries and a couple of DNFs in the rounds before and I left it down until the last round which isn’t what I’d have liked but it made it more interesting for everyone,” said Mewse. “All the fans loved it I think – they were all going crazy – and we managed to get the overall win on the day and brought the championship home. So, yeah, it was a great day for me.”
Beard held a 24-point championship lead over George Sim-Mutch (Manchester MX Husqvarna) with Joel Rizzi (RFX Crescent Yamaha) a further 10 points adrift in the MXY2 class heading into Lyng and his 2-1-1 race scores sealed the deal.
In the Expert MX1 category Carlton Husband (Phoenix Tools Apico Honda) took the title by 28 points from Ross Rutherford (SS DCL KTM) while Liam Knight (Pope Racing KTM) took the MX2 title by seven points ahead of Josh Spinks (M Smith KTM).
