Quad and solo riders from all classes converged on Weymouth Beach for the annual 2016 Beach Race. Riders travelled from all over Europe to compete in the event, we even had a rider from Australia travel over to compete. Jake Shipton, a member of the KTM UK racing team also took to the sands and impressed the spectators with his unique style.
To start off the racing on Saturday, it was turn for the youth’s to show their skills, with riders from just 8 years old! Then the afternoon played host to the adult classes, both classes displayed really close racing on a circuit which included a ½ mile main straight, bomb holes and tabletops incorporated in the 1.5 mile circuit. The circuit was constructed with large machines all supplied from HOLT JCB.
The main section of the circuit ran below the beachfront promenade which was filled with spectators all cheering the riders. It was Vinnie – Ray Guthrie and Harry Pritchard who impressed in the youth ranks both gaining the top spot on the podium for the weekend. Although a cold afternoon on the Dorset coast it did not stop the adult riders, with fantastic performances from Mitch Lewis and Thomas White who clinched the top spot after battling it out over the three races.
The Two wheel Action provided some fantastic entertainment with more riders on track than ever before it made a great weekend not just racing but spectating also. With an estimated 16,000 people lining the esplanade to catch a glimpse of the action.
Sunday was dedicated to all the quadbike racing and what a line-up of great racers which contributed to a great days racing with Carl Bunce, Jamie Clarke and Edward Davies all battling with the European riders providing nail-biting racing and a very close finish.
The event was also graced with clear skies on Sunday which allowed the spectators to cram the esplanade and all were treated to some epic wheel to wheel racing with Carl Bunce winning both the first and second race to secure his top spot. But that wasn’t all, the younger riders impressed with their 4 wheel talent with some showing definite possibilities of advancing to the professional ranks.
Overall the beach race this year was an overwhelming success with more riders, more spectators and more action. The whole weekend was covered by numerous film crews which gave event sponsors ITP, IPONE and Dickies workwear great exposure in the off-road world. Also keep an eye out on our Facebook page for our upcoming 2016 promo video! We hope to see you all in 2017 for the next Weymouth Beach Race!
