WILDCARD WHATLEY SHINES AT Rd 3 PHOENIX TOOLS IFLY PREMIER CHAMPIONSHIP
Last Sunday round 3 of the Phoenix Tools Ifly Premier motocross Championship took place at the ever popular Garlands Moor track Nr Holsworthy. The track was to be a bit damp in places after the rain prior to the meeting, but it was prepped nigh on to perfection and was to produce some really fast and top quality racing.

In the Pro Expert class there was a fair entry and included wildcard Kristian Whatley on the Buildbase Honda who was having his first ride in the series. In the opening race it was the Phoenix Tools Ifly Husqvarna of Alex Snow who was to get the best start from Whatley with Dan Thornhill on the Cab Screens Yamaha there in 3rd. Snow was put under huge pressure on the opening lap from Whatley who seemed to be in a real hurry to hit the front which he did on lap 2 passing Snow over one of the jumps. Thornhill was soon under pressure from fellow Phoenix Tools Ifly Husqvarna rider Alfie Smith who wasted no time in getting pass and was now in 3rd giving chase, but this was to no avail as Whatley stormed away to take the win with Snow a comfortable 2nd.

In the second moto Whatley hit the front from the start from Snow and Smith and it didn’t take Whatley long to ease away at the front, but disaster struck for Whatley on lap 5 when he made a mistake and went down, luckily his bike kept running and he was to rejoin behind Snow who had taken the lead. Whatley was soon back on the gas and was closing in on Snow all the time and a lap later Whatley regained the lead and from there went on to take the chequered flag with Snow again 2nd and Smith 3rd.

In the last race this time it was Thornhill who didn’t give an inch going in to the first corner with the holeshot from Snow with Whatley there in 3rd. Whatley was to get pass Snow on the opening lap and was to gradually haul in Thornhill, but it wasn’t until the end of lap 2 that Whatley took the lead with Snow also getting pass Thornhill who was up in to 2nd, but with a clear track in front of him Whatley went on to make it a hat trick of wins on the day with Snow yet again taking 2nd with Smith after a mid race tussle with Thornhill coming home in 3rd.

In the Expert class there were a few missing, but making a return after leading the Championship after the opening round was Ty Kellett on the S J Hodder Husqvarna who was to show that it wasn’t a fluke at the opening round as he again took a hat trick of wins on the 2-stroke. Luke Sturgeon on the Goss Mx KTM had a pretty good day taking a hattrick of 2nd’s, but taking third overall on the day was the Phoenix Tools Ifly Husqvarna of Charlie Putnam who has now taken the Championship lead away from Ryan Redwood who trails by 3 points.

In the Over age class races which consisted of Over 35, Over 40 and Over 50’s there was some really good battles, but there was no stopping Nick Life onboard the Gibbs Performance/St Blazey Yamaha in the Over 35’s class who extended his Championship lead after taking a hat trick of wins as did the Crescent Suzuki of Terry House who also took three wins in the Over 40’s with Graham Beale now moving up in to 2nd in the Over 50’s Championship as he also took a hat trick of wins.

In the Junior Championship class there were many wildcards, but the rider to beat was young 15 year old Jamie Carpenter on the Phoenix Tools Ifly Husqvarna who was having his first ride at this venue and he had soon got to grips with it as he was unstoppable and increased his Championship lead to 93 points after taking a dominant hat trick of wins ahead of Billy King on the R J King Kawasaki who finished 2nd to him in all three races and Reagan Skinner who took a hat trick of 3rd’s.
